Teaching Philosophy

My main goal as a teacher is to allow students to grow their love and appreciation for all styles of music while preparing them for any musical aspirations they may have.

I believe students should be well-informed in as many styles of music as possible. This is accomplished by listening to a variety of artists in each style, as well as working on repertoire in those styles. Learning about styles one may not be familiar with can influence their approach to other styles. In addition to listening to recordings, students should go to live performances as often as they can. A live performance can be just as inspiring, if not more so, than listening to a recording. Additionally, if one wishes to work in the music industry, they must support those who are in it.

I encourage my students to have as many points of view as possible about music. Taking lessons with other high-caliber musicians can give students a point of view I may not be able to give them. This can also be a good opportunity to build one’s professional network if the seek a career in the arts.

Making music with others is a critical part of being a musician. Students should seek out opportunities to make music with their peers wherever they can, whether it be forming a chamber ensemble with friends, going to local jam sessions, or even just playing duets with other students. This can build ensemble skills that can be applied to professional ensembles, as well as build relationships with other musicians and students.

Finally, I believe that as musicians, we are never done learning about our craft. I am committed to continuous learning, and will continue to learn and grow with my students. There is always something new to learn regardless of age or skill level. I encourage students to adopt this mentality throughout their lives and careers, whether they choose to continue music or not.
